Ranking a website for wedding venue keywords has become increasingly difficult over the past few years. Wedding venue owners in 2016 are challenged with trying to establish online visibility within a huge sea of competitor venues while at the same time having to deal with increased costs for highly-competitive paid ad campaigns. Not a very fun scenario… but there’s hope.
Today I’m sharing ten actionable SEO tips and strategies that you can start implementing today to help improve your organic rankings and find more potential wedding venue clients online. As always, if you have any specific questions, feel free to contact us here.
Now let’s get started:
1. New Keyword Opportunities
Knowing the search phrases that today’s planning couples are typing into Google is key to increasing your visibility and boosting online traffic to your website. Instead of just trying to rank for the notoriously highly-competitive phrases that every venue in your area is also going after, broaden your keyword focus to target popular longtail searches.
Below are 15 (untapped) wedding keyword opportunities that all wedding venue owners should consider ranking for in 2016. Add your city name or region to these to localize the SEO. These are the exact keyword phrases that we’ve found quick success for many of our existing venue clients.
• wedding reception venues
• banquet halls
• outdoor/indoor wedding venues
• wedding venues under $1000
• wedding halls
• wedding locations
• small wedding venues
• wedding sites
• inexpensive wedding venue
• wedding places
• wedding destinations
• wedding venue [zip code]
• barn wedding venues
• gay-friendly wedding venues
• all-inclusive wedding venues
Most of these have proven to be consistent traffic-drivers throughout the entire year.
2. Optimize Your Website Photos
You probably optimize the text on your website for search engines but did you know that you can optimize the images and photos you use, too?
First, start off by making sure all of your images include ALT text
Check to ensure every image/photo on your website includes an ALT text description. Having ALT text helps search engines better understand the photos on your website, which increases the chances of those photos showing up in Google’s image search.
If you use WordPress, it’s quite easy to insert alt attributes into photos. When you upload an image, just insert your text into the “Alternative Text” dialogue box and your image will be all set with alt text.
Second, use readable file names
When you save a photo and upload it to your website, the file name of that image is used by search engines to help them understand the image. By using sensible file names, you are optimizing the image for SEO.
Good Example: wedding-venue-in-miami.jpg
Bad Example: image4587_dn-10-31-2015.jpg
Third, re-size your images
When you serve up images that are the exact size you want the image to display on your website, you eliminate the overhead it takes to have the browser re-size the image for you. You also make it easier and faster for your webpage to load. By reducing the image/file size of your photos, you effectively optimize that page for higher rankings in Google.
3. Make Your Website Faster
Now that Google has confirmed site speed is a SEO signal used by its ranking algorithm, having a website that loads fast and efficiently is an absolute necessity in 2016 and beyond.
Head on over to Google’s PageSpeed Tool to see your pagespeed score and get a list of recommendations to make your site faster and more mobile-friendly.
4. Leverage Social Media
The great strength of social media is in its ability to allow instant communication between businesses and clients. Today’s planning couples are increasingly using social platforms such as Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter and Instagram to help them find the wedding venue of their dreams.
I suggest making it a priority to participate in at least one social network and really strive to build your brand and presence. Social media can be a powerful lead generator when you build and maintain it well.
Citations on external listing services are heavily weighted factors for generating high-traffic local SEO signals. They help boost local SEO in much the same way that traditional backlinks work for Google’s traditional SEO algorithm. As a local business, you should strive to have as many business citations as possible. Here are a few of the most popular U.S. citation sources:
These local citations are really important especially if you are just starting a wedding venue business.
6. Inbound Links
How many backlinks does your website have? How many does your competitor have? One of my favorite tools for checking the backlink portfolio for any website is AHREFS. Increasing the total number of relevant, authoritative backlinks to your website is probably the most powerful thing you can do to help improve your rankings. 7. Have a Blog
Having a blog on your website is the easiest way to create new content once your basic, static web pages have been built. Google loves fresh content and tends to rank it better than old information that has existed for quite some time.
Don’t know what to write about? Below are 12 topics that may inspire you to get blogging:
• Emerging trends you are seeing within your client base
• Compile a list of common mistakes in your niche
• Answer a recent comment you’ve received in length
• Review a product or service that you utilize for your job
• Interview a local wedding pro
• Host a giveaway or contest
• Write a post in response to some recent post/news
• Showcase some of your recent work
• Write a longer “About Me” post
• Make a post about your most popular posts
• Publish a questions and answers blog post
• Create a video post
8. Create Videos
YouTube is the 2nd most popular search engine in the world. Over the past few years, it has transformed the way planning couples are researching possible venue locations in their city.
Creating short videos that showcase/highlight your venue location is a great way to get your business in front of more potential customers. The best part about it, is that your local competitors are probably not going after this audience. Here’s a great resource from QuickSprout to get you started.
9. Be Mobile-Friendly
Having a mobile-friendly website is a must. Head on over to the Google mobile-friendly tool to see if Google considers your website optimized for phones and tables. A failing score means you will need to update your website to a mobile responsive design. ThemeForest is a popular choice for finding responsive website templates that are mobile-friendly.
10. Google My Business
Google My Business is a free and easy-to-use online tool that you can use to manage your brand presence across Google. By verifying and editing your business information, you can have your business hours, phone number, and directions show up within Google Maps and Google Local search results.
Every local business should be taking advantage of this powerful dashboard provided by Google.
